Shooting guard excels in win over Georgetown

By Cathy McLaren

Kelly Komara almost did it again.

After a perfect shooting night on Saturday, Komara was near perfect Monday night against Georgetown, hitting 5 of 6 from the field, all from 3-point range, and 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Georgetown coach Patrick Knapp, though upset at his team's defensive lapses against her, was impressed by the Purdue guard's efforts.

"You'd think they'd know that No. 3 hasn't missed a 3-point shot in, like, a decade," he said.

Teammate Katie Douglas expressed confidence in Komara. "It was good to see Kelly hit those shots. If I knew why she was shooting like that, I'd pay her to give me a little advice," joked Douglas.

In a game dominated by the Hoyas inside, Purdue was able to get the ball to Komara for some open looks. The junior guard gave credit to her teammates for penetrating and dishing out to her.

"Our team did an excellent job of kicking out," said Komara. "Whenever somebody like Katie or Erika (Valek) drives in, they've got to respect that. Whenever they respect their penetration, I'm hoping I'm behind the 3-point line."

Komara's efforts Monday night, combined with her 3-of-3 finish from behind the arc on Saturday, tied the school record set by Cindy Lamping of eight consecutive 3-pointers made.

Her ninth attempt, shot with 8:50 remaining in the second half, was off. Komara said she knew the shot was off when the ball left her hands. "I rushed it a bit," she said. "I knew (a miss) was coming eventually."

That miss, however, is Komara's only one of the season.

Shooting nearly 91 percent from the field and 100 percent from the free throw line in two games, Komara has proven her capabilities at shooting guard. Though Komara played the point guard position last year, this season freshman Erika Valek took over the position, returning Komara to her natural role.

"The situation we were in last year, we took and made the best of it and put her in the position we felt was best for us at the time," said coach Kristy Curry. "And now I'm really excited — eager again — to let her have that opportunity to play the 2. I think that's where she'll flourish. I have all the confidence in the world in her."
