Center to host tribute honoring King

By Laura Pelner

The African American Studies and Research Center will host a one-day symposium to honor the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday.

Beginning at 9 a.m. in Stewart Center, Room 318, the symposium will include two lectures and three movies.

Leonard Harris, a professor of philosophy and African American studies, will speak at 9 a.m. Harris' speech, "The Making of a King," will address King's legacy.

"I will talk about King's intellectual tradition and the importance of the intellectual community that he is a part of," said Harris. "I'll be talking about the significance of his idea of a beloved community and the way we have not yet achieved that community."

Harris has talked about King before and is very familiar with King's legacy as he is actually teaching a class this semester dedicated to the studies of King.

The film portion of the program is called "An America Yet to Be — Screening of Civil Rights Films." At 10:30 a.m. "Four Little Girls" will be shown, at 12 p.m. "At the River I Stand" will be shown and at 1:30 p.m. "The Road to Brown" will be shown.

The last event will be the second lecture. Lou Turner, an assistant professor of sociology at North Central College in Chicago, will speak at 7 p.m.

Harris said this will be a meaningful day. "It's an important program. It's part of our intellectual heritage and our community."

Harris hopes that everyone attends the program because it is open to all. "It's part of the college experience and it's an indication that people have a commitment to social justice."
