Two and a half years of anticipating the coming of a portable sports court at the Recreational Sports Center have finally ended.
Beginning this morning in the North Gym, students were able to rollerblade or get in on games of roller hockey, indoor soccer, rugby, lacrosse or futsal, an indoor soccer game played without using walls, on the RSCs new portable sports court.
"Its been in the making for about two and a half years and people keep asking and coming back to us asking when it will be ready," said Vince Daino, assistant director of recreational sports for club sports.
According to Daino, the court will affect the school ice hockey club the most. The club practices only once a week, traveling to Indianapolis to use an ice rink. With the additional resources, it may now add more practice time.
"Its good that now we can practice more and only have to travel two minutes to get there," said Tim Fryer, treasurer of the club and a junior in the School of Technology.
Sports clubs have already made reservations for the first few nights. There will also be open times during the day for non-league or club sports to use the court.
A four-person crew from Minnesota transformed the North Gym into a sports court. Removable boards and glass will be used to convert the court from a hockey environment to a soccer playing field.
The North Gym had previously been used as a badminton and martial arts practice area. Three portable courts have been placed upstairs for badminton.
The sports court has been made free standing to avoid damaging the North Gym wooden floors.
"Its even portable so if one piece of the rink breaks, we just have to replace it like tiles," said Daino. "And if we decide to make it into an ice rink, then we just have to pick it up and move it outside. It can happen without a big mess."
According to Clint Hafliger, assistant director of recreational sports for intramural sports and Lisa Stuppy, assistant director of recreational sports for fitness and wellness, the RSC will continue to include programs from last semester such as fraternity bowling or Wellness Wednesday, where familiarizing oneself with the RSC is the goal.
Most programs are free, but some require a fee. All programs and events will be posted on bulletin boards in the RSC.
