Match gives senior repeat Big Ten title

Jason Marshall

Senior Jason Marshall won the 2001 Big Ten Singles Championship on Monday in Ann Arbor, Mich. The title is the second in Marshall's career at Purdue.

"We are extremely proud of Jason," Purdue tennis coach Tim Madden said. "He stayed focused throughout the weekend and found a way to get the job done. He has always been a great player, but I am proud to say I am now seeing him grow into an exceptional leader."

Marshall, ranked No. 29 in the nation, defeated Michigan State’s Goran Topalo 7-5, 6-1 in his first match Saturday. When all of his teammates had been eliminated, Marshall stayed alive by beating Northwestern’s Jackie Jenkins 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the Round of 16.

Marshall picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ohio State's Phil Metz in the quarterfinal round.

The win over Metz set up a match with Penn State's Jamie Gresh. Marshall beat Gresh 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3.

In the finals, Marshall, a No. 2 seed in the tournament, defeated the No. 1 seed Harsh Mankad of Minnesota, 6-1, 6-3.

"Jason displayed an excellent sense of mental toughness in the finals," Madden said. "The team was ecstatic with his win."

Marshall, who was also the 1999 Big Ten Singles Champion, and the Boilermakers will begin dual action on Jan. 27 when they face Western Michigan at the Lafayette Sports Center.
