The Purdue Cooperative Council will host its rush
for new members beginning Saturday.
Wendy Hantelman, the vice president of membership
for the council, said that Saturday and Jan. 27 there will be formal
rush for all those interested in joining the cooperative housing system.
Hantelman said that if someone is not already registered
they can still go on Saturday or Jan. 27 and go through formal rush.
"On Saturday and Jan. 27 we have formal rush where
people go through and tour each house. People only have to go to one
of the two days," said Hantelman.
The women who go through cooperative rush will
get formal invitations to go back to specific houses on Feb. 3 and 4
and Hantelman said that the women with invitations can choose to visit
the houses they like from the list of those they are invited to.
Hantelman added that the men who go through rush
tour the houses on Saturday and Jan. 27, and then they have to decide
if they want to interview for a spot in the house.
Heather Quirk, the president of the cooperative
council, said that rush is laid back and fun. "(People) get to tour
the houses. They get a feel for us and we get a feel for them, but it's
not an intense thing."
Hantelman added that cooperative rush is open for
everyone.
Both Hantelman and Quirk expect that this year's
rush will be successful. "So far this semester we've gotten a really
good response," said Hantelman. "We've been mailing out information.
I've mailed out over 200 rush books to freshmen on campus. We're hoping
for a large rush for both men and women."
This is the first year that the cooperative system
is conducting rush completely by itself. "This is the first rush where
we own our own houses and we're doing everything ourselves. We're the
only organization on campus that's completely financially responsible."
