The Purdue Student Government passed three bills
and one resolution during its Senate session Wednesday night.
A bill to give money for a trip to the Association
of Big Ten Students 2001 Conference was passed and sent to the Finance
and Internal Affairs committees.
An amended version of a bill to give money for
a new computer to be used as a Web server for the PSG Web page and upcoming
roommate finder service was also passed and sent to the Finance and
Internal Affairs committees.
A bill to give money for a PSG spring retreat to
be held at the University Church in February was passed under emergency
funding.
A resolution to acknowledge the accomplishments
of the Purdue football team during the 2000 season was passed and a
letter commending the football team will be sent from PSG to the football
team.
A resolution for the student body to join a movement
set forth by universities to call upon the 107th U.S. Congress to overturn
the
section of the "Higher Education Act of 1998" that
denies or delays access to financial aid based upon convictions for
drug-related offenses.
Also during the session Jim Vaca, PSG president,
and Patrick Mondi, PSG vice president, announced their veto of a bill
that would have required one public meeting per month between senators
and their constituents.
Vaca said, "We decided to do what the bill said,
but we think it's useless as a bill. This was something that was supposed
to be discussed between the two groups. We really didn't need it be
part of our by-laws."
The motion to overrule the veto failed to be passed.
Also during the meeting, formal invitations for
speaking engagements were approved to be sent to TV personality Jerry
Springer and retired Dutch general and former director of Peace Keeping
Missions for the United Nations Frank Van Kappen.
If accepted, both of the speaking engagements are
planned for later this semester.
Carly Maitlen, PSG director of student recruitment,
announced that plans for the Friday of Grand Prix Weekend will be set
by Feb. 14.
Also discussed were plans to look into the problems
associated with the posting policy that includes the chalkings and fliers
on the walkways and the credit card vendors on campus. If PSG decides
it is necessary, it will look into changing the present policies on
both situations.
