Quick start propels Boilers to victoryBy Anne McLaren
Purdue got the quick start it was looking for against Northwestern but had to use a second half run to close out the Wildcats, 78-59, in Mackey Arena on Saturday. After Northwestern (7-11, 0-6 Big Ten) cut the score to 39-36 on a 3-pointer by Collier Drayton with 14:08 remaining, Purdue (12-5, 4-2) went on a 15-2 run highlighted by consecutive 3-pointers by Rodney Smith, Maynard Lewis and Austin Parkinson. "After they cut it to three, I think we panicked for a little bit," said Parkinson, who distributed a career-high 7 assists. "Once we turned it up defensively guys started playing with some energy, trying to get the crowd into it I think we did better in the second half." Smith led all scorers with 27 points, tying his career high set against UCLA earlier this season. Smith shot 10 of 12 from the field but just 5 of 10 from the free throw line. In Big Ten play, Smith is shooting just 52 percent from the line. "I dont know why Im missing my free throws," said Smith. "I keep staying after practice all the time (to practice). I dont know whats the matter with me. This is the first time Ive had a funk shooting free throws." Boilers survive slow start, beat Spartans 57-34As Purdue coach Kristy Curry said, it wasnt pretty, but the Boilers won their eighth straight contest by defeating Michigan State 57-34 in Mackey Arena Thursday night. The Boilers (16-3, 6-0 Big Ten) and Spartans (8-9, 2-4) started slowly. Four minutes into the contest the score was tied at two. With the Spartans leading 11-9 with 10 minutes until halftime, senior Katie Douglas scored nine unanswered points to give the Boilers a comfortable lead. At halftime, No. 6 Purdue led 22-15. Access speed upsets studentsPurdue students who live in the University Residences, and those who live off campus and use Purdue servers to access the Internet, have had trouble getting online in the last two weeks. "It started when we got back from break; the connection is getting slower and slower," said Kalen Cartwright, a freshman in the School of Technology. "It got to the point where we couldn't connect to any outside web pages anything off the Purdue server, it would not load it would just time out. At home we use a 56K modem and we considered plugging that in to our (computer and) phone here because it would be faster." A lot of students have had similar complaints. Steve Barg, a part-time student and a staff applications developer for Purdue, said he tried to download a demo of the program Diablo II and waited a long time. University names new fire chief, parking managerTwo Purdue employees have been promoted to the positions of fire chief and manager of parking facilities. Ken Alling, a 1984 Purdue graduate, will be named the new fire chief of the Purdue Police Department and Mike Jasper, a 1980 Purdue graduate, was named the manager of parking facilities earlier this month. The director of Purdue Safety and Security, Bill Coghill, hired the men and made the announcements. |
