At the Purdue Board of Trustees last meeting, on
Dec. 16, it approved a new distinguished professor in engineering and
honored a professor in veterinary medicine.
The honorees are Alten Grandt and Richard Borgens.
Timothy McGinley, chairman of the Purdue Board
of Trustees, said, "Only the very best are recognized and these two
fit this category. It's also an honor for the Board of Trustees to recognize
the best of Purdue's faculty."
Alten Grandt, professor of aeronautics and astronautics,
was appointed the Raisbeck Engineering Distinguished Professor of Engineering
and Integration distinguished professorship.
The award is named for a Seattle engineering firm
founded by James Raisbeck, a 1961 Purdue graduate from the Schools of
Engineering.
"It gives me the opportunity to give engineering
students a background in practical applications, to see the theoretical
concepts reduced into practical applications and likewise it will be
a chance to give technical students the theoretical issues associated
with aircraft design," said Grandt.
Grandt was also honored in December with the U.S.
Air Force John Lincoln Award for his contributions to the study of flight
vehicle structural integrity and safety.
Richard Borgens, a professor of developmental anatomy
and biomedical engineering, was named the new Mari Hulman George Professor
of Applied Neuroscience in the School of Veterinary Medicine.
The award is named for and funded by Mari Hulman
George, chairwoman of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and continued
Purdue benefactor.
With this recognition, Borgens becomes the first
endowed professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Borgens said the endowed professorship acknowledges
not only him, but the School of Veterinary medicine as well.
"This chair is a permanent part of the University.
If I leave, it would be filled by another person, so it guarantees the
continuance of this work in which we have been successful," said Borgens.
He also said the endowed professorship would make
the School of Veterinary Medicine and its accomplishments more visible.
Borgens also holds three patents in the field of
spinal cord injuries and serves as director of Purdue's Center for Paralysis
Research and director of the Institute for Applied Neurology.
With these appointments, the University now has
48 distinguished professors and 21 endowed professors.
The Board also granted Robert Stroud, Purdue Airport
director, emeritus status. He became director emeritus effective with
his retirement on Jan. 1.
