Renovation forces street, lot to close

By Lynde Smith
Staff Writer

Beginning Feb. 12, the south portion of Beering Drive will close in preparation for the Ross-Ade renovation.

The road, which runs adjacent to the stadium, will be moved as far west as possible and run against Ross-Ade Drive. The two roads will then be separated by a retaining wall.

The closing will affect some parking around the area. The C lot between Beering Drive and Ross-Ade Drive will be closed throughout the construction.

Stadium parking will also lose some space. A hundred feet of the parking lot will be blocked off for contractor use including storage for materials and deliveries, said Tom Schmenk, director of facilities planning.

In addition, the bus stop on Beering Drive will be moved across the stadium lot to North University Drive, Schmenk said.

Ross-Ade Drive from Beering Drive to Hilltop Apartment Building 11 will be closed during the relocation.

University Drive, which runs along the east side of the stadium, will remain open during this time, as will the intersection of Tower and Beering drives.

"It will be an inconvenience for off-campus students to deal with the traffic congestion and parking problems that it will cause, especially during sporting events," said Karen Hickman, a senior in the School of Liberal Arts. "And when you are running late for class what used to take you five minutes will now take you ten."

The Beering Drive project should be finished by August when students return for classes.
