Men's swim team earns one win, two losses

The 19th-ranked Purdue men's swim team fell Saturday in a double-dual meet against the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines and the No. 23 Penn State Nittany Lions.

Michigan (3-4) beat the Boilermakers (6-2, 2-2 Big Ten) 183-60 while Penn State (3-1) won 171-72.

"(Saturday) was a rough day for us," Purdue coach Dan Ross said. "This weekend was a battle for us and although we didn't have a great team showing, we did have some outstanding individual performances. This next week will give us plenty of time to rebound and come back to be ready to go for the next three weeks of hard, Big Ten competition."

The outstanding individual performances included senior Matt Martin's season-best time 9:12.84 in the 100 free, freshman Tamas Bessenyei's second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:00.89, and the 400 medley relay team's time of 3:21.01 and second-place finish. Team members included senior Juan Rodela, Bessenyei, sophomore Tad Sayce and senior Jon Duncan.

In the one-meter diving competition, freshman John Haglund finished sixth with 225.85 points and junior Kevin Young finished eighth with 213.35 points.

Purdue 172, Michigan State 128

The Boilers picked up a 172-128 victory Friday evening at Michigan State. The Spartans fall to 2-3 (0-2 Big Ten).

"We feel pretty good after this meet," Ross said. "This wasn't a difficult win for us, but we're glad to get another win on our record."

The Boilermakers did not win an event until the fifth, the 100 breaststroke. Bessenyei came through in 55.76 to put Purdue back in the meet.

The 50 freestyle gave Purdue its first 1-2 finish of the night with senior Dave Weis finishing in 21.27 and Duncan finishing in 21.67.

Duncan turned around and came right back to grab a first-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 46.47.

Rodela was Purdue's top finisher in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.11. Classmate Ian Caswell and freshman Will Seelbach finished third and fourth place finishes. Their times were 1:55.37 and 1:55.81, respectively.

In the 200 breast, Bessenyei took his second first-place finish of the meet in 2:02.14 and Diaz took second in 2:10.54.

Martin finished first in the 500 free in 4:33.10.

With a time of 50.71, senior Matt Garrison finished first in the 100 butterfly while junior teammate Donovan Crowley finished third in 51.87.

Diaz collected his second first-place finish of the night in 4:04.50 in the 400 individual medley. Junior Tom Drejer, with a time of 4:09.01, and Cenci, with a time of 4:13.43, helped Purdue to its only 1-2-3 finish of the night.

In the final event of the evening, the Boilermaker 400 free relay team of Duncan, freshman Kyle Jackson, Rodela and Wright finished second in 3:06.83.

Due to a timing system error, the events of 400 medley relay and 100 backstroke were thrown out of the meet results.
