celebration

In an effort to show appreciation to students living
in the residence halls this year, University Residences are holding
a weeklong celebration.
"Celebrate the Residences Week" began Monday and
will culminate Saturday night with the Residence Hall Council's Winterfest.
Nikki Grosso, marketing and communications coordinator
for Housing and Food Services, said, "Part of the intent of the program
is to show our appreciation to the residents who have stayed here this
year."
The event is also being held as a precursor the
reapplication campaign. Residence officials are hoping the program will
influence students when they decide whether or not to return to the
University Residences.
Christine Porcaro, a freshman in the School of
Liberal Arts and Shreve Hall resident, said she thought the program
was a bonus to living in the halls, but she is already leaning toward
living off campus next semester; the program probably will not influence
her decision.
Stephen Hilker, a freshman in the School of Management
and Cary Quadrangle resident, said if not for the fact that he was already
committed to living in a fraternity next year, the program might have
influenced his decision.
The program started Monday, when free coupons for
food items in the mini-marts were issued to students.
On Tuesday, the University Residence cable system
added the Country Music Channel to its listing as channel 38.
Jay Mermoud, Boiler Television manager, said surveys
were passed out to 800 random students living in the University Residences
asking them to indicate what television channel they would like to see
added to the cable system. Country Music Television received more votes
than any other channel.
The University Residences are also holding a contest
in correlation with the new channel, the winners of which will receive
free County Music Channel merchandise.
At 8 tonight, "Scary Movie" will premier on Boiler
TV and free chili cheese dogs will be offered to students.
Starting at 5 p.m. Thursday and lasting until 8
a.m. Monday the University Residences are offering free laundry services
for all students living in the residence halls.
All electronically controlled laundry machines
are preset to work without money during those times. The non-electronically
controlled machines in Hilltop apartments will work only when coins
are inserted but students will immediately receive their money back.
Hilker said he would use the free laundry service
as long as the laundry rooms were not filled with other students who
have the same idea.
Dave Bassett, assistant director of food stores,
said the funds to pay for the laundry service will come out of residence
hall revenues.
From 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday in the Purdue
Memorial Union, the Residence Hall Council will sponsor its annual Winterfest.
All students living in University residence halls are welcome to attend
the event.
