Man faces charge of sexual battery

From Staff Reports

A West Lafayette man was arrested on a charge of sexual battery Tuesday afternoon.

Purdue Police Captain Steven Dietrich said in a news release that a male student reported that he was approached and grabbed by a man at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in a restroom in the Purdue Memorial Union.

John C. Schmidt, 35, who has an outstanding warrant for his arrest, was arrested at the scene and Dietrich said he would be taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail.

Sexual battery is a Class D felony and is punishable by a jail term of one and one-half to three years and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
