Internet speed needs improvement

Sitting down to read the Exponent on Jan. 19, I was relieved to finally see an article about the recent decline in the access speed of all RESNET networks.

I was hoping to read an article saying the problem was close to being resolved and things would soon return to normal, but as it turns out, the further I read into the article, the more angered I became. None of my questions were answered. I still knew the network was not working as well as it used to, but I neither knew why nor when it would be fixed. In nearly all my classes, I am constantly drilled with how the material being covered relates to industry. With this in mind, how does this recent network shortcoming apply to us students? I intern in the information systems department of a Fortune 100 company, and the stability of the network is the No. 1 priority. A network lapse of minutes or hours can have vast effects on productivity and therefore cause a loss of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars. So ask yourself how much of your time has been wasted over the past two weeks because of slow e-mail, slow downloads, slow web browsing, etc. A two-week network lapse could cost a company millions.

The seemingly apathetic computing center claims that there is no indication that the reorganizations over break are responsible for the decline. Maybe so, but as a paying user I can tell that my Internet connection is not as fast/stable as it was previously. The time for theories and speculation is long since over. I am sure some action has been taken, but just to reiterate, the time it has taken to try to resolve this problem has taken (and continues to take) an unacceptably long time.
