Swimmers to face Minnesota, Wisconsin in weekend meet

The Purdue men's swim team will head to Madison, Wis., to take on both Wisconsin and Minnesota on Friday and Saturday. The 19th-ranked Boilermakers are 5-2 (2-2 Big Ten) on the season, while the 21st-ranked Wisconsin Badgers are 4-0 (2-0 Big Ten), and the 16th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers are 3-1 (3-0 Big Ten).

"This weekend will be a good test for us," Purdue head coach Dan Ross said. "We're starting our stretch of our meets against those top five teams in the Big Ten and it's really important that we compete and compete well. Our toughest challenge this weekend will be Wisconsin. It'll be a close team match-up and will probably preview some of the competition we'll see at the Big Ten's. We'll have some good individual match-ups with Minnesota as well."

Like the women's team, the Boilermakers will really focus on their relay teams as their strong point. They will have four chances to grab eleven points for a first-place finish. On the Big Ten seeding list, Purdue's top times are right with Wisconsin and Minnesota's times, which should make for good races.

The team will look to senior co-captain Matt Martin in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle for close races with Minnesota's Justin Mortimer.

In the 50 free, senior Dave Weis should provide a good match-up with Minnesota's Greg Butler, as his seed time is only 0.02 seconds behind Butler's.

First-year team member Tamas Bessenyei falls right between Wisconsin's Lance Jones and Minnesota's Jeff Hackler with his seed time in the 100 breaststroke, while he is well ahead of all four Wisconsin and Minnesota times in the 200.

In the 100 and 200 fly, sophomore Tad Sayce's times are also very close to both the Wisconsin and Minnesota times, also making for interesting races.
