Conference shapes leaders

Future leaders of Purdue, and possibly the nation, spent part of their weekend learning how to become better leaders and students.

The Mortar Board Leadership Conference, which took place in Stewart Center on Saturday, taught students some of the skills to succeed in the classroom and as leaders.

"This year's conference went really well," said Joshua Merrill, a senior in the School of Agriculture and co-chairperson of the leadership conference. "There was a lot more enthusiasm than I expected at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning."

The conference, which had a 'hard rock' theme this year, was broken down into an opening session, three breakout sessions and a closing session featuring a speech by Purdue president Martin Jischke.

Students were given the option of choosing which breakout sessions they wanted to attend. Each session was hosted by different University and business leaders and covered a range of topics such as job searching, etiquette skills and group motivation.

"It was good to see all the students there, and hopefully they will take something home with them, whether it's a new idea, new friends or a new outlook on leadership," said Merrill.

"I really enjoyed the talk by 'Mom Nonnie,'" said Goris. "She taught us a lot about etiquette and was really funny." 'Mom Nonnie,' also know as Nonnie Cameron, is a nationally recognized authority on etiquette.

"I learned a lot of stuff about relaxation," said Ron Barkowski, a freshman in the School of Management. "It will really help to lower my stress level during the school year."

Jischke spoke at the closing of the conference, urging students to take on a leadership role at Purdue and take advantage of opportunities.

"One of the remarkable things about our society is that opportunities for leadership exist every day, everywhere and in every community: on the school board, the county council, you can help with the Boys and Girls Clubs, civic projects and charity groups like the people who have worked to make this University better for the students to come, and particularly for you," said Jischke.
