Swim team defeats Illini, loses to others

The Purdue women's swim team came away from the Quad Meet, hosted by Wisconsin, with a victory over Illinois and losses to Wisconsin and Minnesota Saturday in Madison, Wis.

The scores were as follows: Purdue 205, Illinois 147; Wisconsin 248.5, Purdue 113.5; Minnesota 215, Purdue 138. The women are 11-4 (4-4 Big Ten).

"This was the first time in four years that we've beat Illinois," Coach Cathy Wright-Eger said. "I think that we swam really well on Friday, but today we kind of backed off. I know that the whole team is tired and we need to get a lot of rest, but beating Illinois was our main goal going into the weekend and we did."

In the 100 free, senior Gyongyver Lakos was defeated for the first time this year with a second-place finish and a time of 52.65.

Senior Brianna Reina finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.60. Freshman Lindsay Kirchoff finished eighth with a time of 2:26.18 and junior teammate Ronica Rogalski finished ninth with a time of 2:27.30.

In the final event of the weekend, Purdue's 400 free relay team of Lisa Dolansky, Patricia Finnerty, Missy Bromley and Lakos lost for the first time this season. The Boilermakers finished fourth with a time of 3:37.60.

In diving, juniors Molly MacFarlane and Kara Hajek finished second and third against Minnesota and first and second against both Illinois and Wisconsin.
