Tennis team beats Utah after
loss to Brigham Young
The Purdue women's tennis team is off to a 1-1
start following a weekend split on the road.
The Boilers picked up a 4-3 win Sunday against
Utah, the day after losing 5-2 to Brigham Young.
"This was a good win for our team, especially since
we were on the road," Coach Mat Iandolo said. "We made some good adjustments
from Saturday to Sunday and that made the difference."
Purdue secured its first point by winning two of
the three doubles matches. Erika Quebe and Lynsey Fick defeated Irini
Kotoglou and Frida Kareld 8-6 at the No. 1 position. At No. 3, Melissa
Woods paired with classmate Melissa Iqbal to knock off Linn Ronnberg
and Heidi Thomas 8-4.
In singles action, two Boilermakers picked up wins.
Iqbal defeated Cassie Kasteler 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles position.
Missy Wright also won her second match of the weekend with a 6-1, 7-6
(5) victory over Brooke Wilkinson.
"Melissa is one of our most talented players, so
nothing she does on the court surprises me," Iandolo said. "It is also
great to have Missy back in the lineup after (she sat) out last season
with a back injury. She is returning to the form that made her one of
the best freshmen in the Big Ten two years ago."
To secure the victory for Purdue, Melissa Woods
defeated Heidi Thomas 6-1, 6-4. Woods also is returning from an injury
that sidelined her last season.
On Saturday Iqbal picked up a 6-4, 3-6, (10-6)
win over BYU's Brooke Ferney at the No. 2 singles position. At No. 6,
Wright defeated Elyse Jensen 2-6, 6-2, (10-0). Woods got the opportunity
to play at No. 7 (not contributing to the overall score) and beat Liza
Khordoiarova 6-2, 4-6 (10-8).
