Fishing program to film in Union

Club lures ESPN show to Purdue

An ESPN camera crew is coming to Purdue, but it has nothing to do with basketball, football or any NCAA-sanctioned sport.

Denny Brauer, a pro bass fisherman who hosts a weekend outdoors show on ESPN, will be in the North Ballroom of Purdue Memorial Union today filming a segment for his show.

The filming, which is closed to those who have not already signed up to attend, will last from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The film from today's shoot will be used in 17 different episodes of the show.

Most of the half-hour show, which airs on weekends during the summer, is Brauer fishing, but there is a segment called "The Bass Class" towards the end of each show. In the segment, Brauer teaches fishing techniques. The Purdue bass class segments will be used on the air beginning in August.

The Purdue Bass Fishing Club, which won the 2000 Big Ten championship, was the organization that lured Brauer to Purdue.

"Everyone's really excited," said Michael Murphy, a sophomore in the School of Agriculture and the club's president.

"Everyone's been really pumped up since we found out about this about a month ago."

Cory Miller, a sophomore in the School of Management and the club's public relations director, said he and others pestered ESPN about having Brauer come to Purdue for more than four months.

"We wanted to get him here so we could try to promote college bass fishing," Miller said. "We've been picking on ESPN for quite a few years to cover the Big Ten Classic in the fall, and there's a possibility that next year they just might do it."

Although professional bass fishing has grown in popularity, there is no national championship at the collegiate level and there are many universities that don't have bass fishing clubs.

"We figure a few people might catch this on TV and say, 'Hey, why don't we have a club?'" Miller said.

Miller said Purdue and other Big Ten clubs have discussed competing with clubs from states such as Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, where fishing is popular year-round.

"It'd be a very good thing," Miller said.
