Sen. Ron Alting, Rep. Sheila Klinker and Rep. Sue
Scholer will be guests at an event intended for Tippecanoe County constituents
to meet their legislators.
The League of Women Voters annual breakfast will
take place at the West Lafayette MCL cafeteria on Sagamore Parkway,
beginning at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday. The league is a non-partisan group
that supports legislative issues, not members of political parties.
Any citizen may attend the session. The cost is
$6 if breakfast is wanted. Otherwise, the event is free.
"Mostly this is an opportunity for people to meet
their legislators," said the league's timekeeper, Ruth Dowden.
The legislative guests will each be given a short
amount of time to speak about their vision for the coming legislative
session and what has been going on up until now, said Dowden. After
each legislator has spoken, Alting, R-22nd, Klinker, D-26th and Scholer,
R-27th, will answer questions submitted by attendants of the breakfast.
Citizens who attend the meeting will be asked to
write down any questions that they have for the legislators on a piece
of paper. The league will then decide which questions the legislators
will address.
Mayor Sonya Margerum says she always enjoys attending
the breakfast because a large amount of information is always provided.
"It's a very lively session," she said.
Scholer will provide some of this year's information.
She plans to give a general overview of how the
legislative session is going, some of the bills she is working on and
the latest on education opportunities.
Scholer is the author or co-author of 34 bills
coming before the general assembly this session. One of these bills
includes arts and service programs, and another concerns education benefits
for stepchildren of war veterans.
After the session ends, legislators usually tend
to stay around for questions, said Dowden.
"This is a good opportunity for people with interest
in journalism or communication," said Dowden.
