Workshop to aid farmers

By Barney Haney
Staff Writer

Being family members and business partners can be a difficult transition; however, the 21st annual Farming Together Workshop, on Friday and Saturday in Stewart Center, Room 318, is put on to help these families out.

Purdue agricultural economist Howard Doster, who has been a part of the workshop since its beginning, said the workshops offer a variety of programs that are geared to assist the future of Indiana farmers.

Doster said, "It's an opportunity to get families together to look at business opportunities and work on various aspects of the plans of farming together."

He added that someone will operate Indiana farmland and the workshop wants to help those people. Doster thinks multi-generation farm families and others who are, or who can become good enough, financed and organized well enough, have the best opportunities for operating the land. The workshop will help farmers become more successful and organized.

Alan Miller, another agricultural economist, said the workshop is also an excellent opportunity for farmers wanting to merge their resources together to compete on a bigger scale.

"The workshop helps to guide people with shared visions on how to put their businesses together," said Miller.

Miller said that at a previous Farming Together Workshops, the economists put together a plan to help five neighboring individuals merge into one business.

In this year's workshop, Purdue agricultural economists will work with families and others to find out if they have the commitment and the physical and financial requirements that it takes to be successful.

Doster said they will help to get families and friends started on having board meetings to make it easier to talk about the tough issues and the good ones.

"(The workshop) helps families and friends to find realistic opportunities in a friendly business environment," said Doster. "This is the most fun weekend of the year for me and the others involved."

To register by phone, call Howard Doster at 494-4250. Walk-ins will be accepted.
