Student finds friend deadFrom Staff Reports A Purdue student was found dead in his apartment late Saturday afternoon, according to West Lafayette Police. Lt. Jason Dombkowski, of the West Lafayette Police Department, said Travis R. Simpson, 19, of 249-7 S. Salisbury, was found unconscious at approximately 4:25 Saturday afternoon by a friend, who called 911. As of late Sunday evening, the cause of Simpson's death is unknown and attempts to reach the county coroner were unsuccessful.
Robberies baffle police, witnessesThree armed robberies took place in Lafayette within two hours of each other Saturday morning. "Some similarities are associated with two of the armed robberies, but we can't really say for sure that they are related," said Lt. Larry Danaher of the Lafayette Police Department. Sgt. Kurt Wolf of the Lafayette Police Department said that it is very unusual for three robberies to occur in such a short time span.
Students' studies pay offThe average college student couldn't imagine making $70,000 a year while still being in school, though a group of students at Purdue managed to make that much in January alone. Timothy Dona, a graduate student in the Krannert School of Management and the chairman of a student-managed investment fund, said the more than 50 percent return on (the club's) investment portfolio was a result of something called the January Effect. "Our faculty advisor, Mike Cooper, showed us some research from finance journals about something called the January Effect," said Dona. "In December, investors typically sell stocks that have gone down since their initial purchase in order to claim a valuable tax deduction. In January, these stocks that have been depressed by tax loss selling often experience a bounce," he said.
