Robberies baffle police, witnesses

Three armed robberies took place in Lafayette within two hours of each other Saturday morning.

"Some similarities are associated with two of the armed robberies, but we can't really say for sure that they are related," said Lt. Larry Danaher of the Lafayette Police Department.

Sgt. Kurt Wolf of the Lafayette Police Department said that it is very unusual for three robberies to occur in such a short time span.

Wolf said that the robbers displayed guns only as a form of threat and no store clerks were harmed.

No suspects have been named at this time.

The first armed robbery took place at 7:57 a.m. Saturday. The Food Plus store at 903 Kossuth Street was held up by a man described as a white male with medium build, said Lt. Larry Danaher of the Lafayette Police Department. The man was approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall. He was wearing what was described as a white and black coat. The suspect displayed a handgun during the robbery. The vehicle for the robbery was described as a white, small boxy car.

The second armed robbery took place at 9:27 a.m. at the CVS Pharmacy at 1910 Elmwood Avenue. The robber was described as a white male with short brown hair. He was approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall. This robber displayed a handgun as well. The vehicle description given for this robbery was a small dark-colored, boxy vehicle.

At 9:50 a.m. a third armed robbery took place. A man fitting the description of a white male with a short to medium build was described as the robber of the Village Pantry store, at 1008 South 4th Street. The man's face was covered as he displayed a handgun during the robbery. No vehicle description was given for the robbery at Village Pantry. Village Pantry employees are encouraged to cooperate with robbers, giving the robber whatever he or she requests, said Wolf.

Witness descriptions as well as video surveillance cameras are being used for evidence.

"All three stores had video cameras, but the quality of the video is not great," said Wolf.

Undisclosed amounts of cash were taken from each store, said Danaher.

Village Pantry, Food Plus and CVS Pharmacy cannot comment at this time.
