Michigan State dominates Boilermakers in rebounds

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The mean, green rebounding machine of Michigan State took care of business Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans (18-2, 7-2) out-rebounded Purdue (13-7, 5-4) 53-29, and won the game by a score of 72-55. The plus-24 rebounding margin tops the Spartans' average of plus 16.7, a category in which Michigan State leads the nation. However, the rebounding margin is just the tip of the iceberg in Purdue's trouble on the boards.

Michigan State pulled down 54 percent of all the missed shots they took in the game, while Purdue only mustered to rebound 26 percent of their missed shots.

"It's demoralizing when you can't get a rebound," said junior Rodney Smith. "What can we do? We're not as big as them. But we're trying as hard as we can. Our guys played hard; we just couldn't get any rebounds. They can get big guys in the middle that can get that offensive rebound. We can't do that. We don't have 6 or 7 guys who weigh 260 banging the boards."

Purdue's top rebounder on the night with five boards was a guard, sophomore Willie Deane. The Spartans’ leading rebounders were Jason Richardson (220 pounds), Zach Randolph (270 pounds) and David Thomas (210 pounds). Each had nine boards.

"I thought the rebounding after the first few minutes of the game went our way and that got our break going more and we got more offensive chances and I think that was where the difference in the game was," said MSU coach Tom Izzo.

The Spartans had 23 second chance points while Purdue only managed three.

"They killed us on second shot opportunities. That just gave them more and more chances to score down low," said Deane.

Purdue coach Gene Keady said, "I hope our kids watch the tape of the game and see how it is done — going after the ball, getting loose balls, being aggressive and going up for rebounds with balance. Hopefully this game will help us get better in that aspect, certainly their rebounding was pretty impressive."
