Athletes of month receive recognition for performances

Seniors Gyongyver Lakos of the women’s swim team and Jason Marshall of the men’s tennis team have been named the Purdue athletes of the month for January.

During the month of January, Lakos remained undefeated in the 100 and 200 freestyle events for three weeks, beginning the season with a 7-0 record. In a meet against Indiana, the last women's meet in the history of Lambert Pool, Lakos set pool records with times of 51.02 in the 100 and 1:50.20 in the 200. Lakos, a 2000 Olympian for her home country of Hungary, leads Purdue with top time in the 200 freestyle (1:48.07).

Marshall captured the 2001 Big Ten Singles Championship Jan. 15 to become Purdue’s first men’s tennis player to win the championship twice in his career. En route to the title, Marshall, also the champion in 1999, beat Penn State's Jamie Gresh in the semifinals, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3. In the finals, Marshall, a No. 2 seed in the tournament, defeated No. 1 seed Harsh Mankad (Minnesota) 6-1, 6-3. Marshall is ranked 29th in the nation and is 14-4 this season.
