Volunteers respond to Bush's proposal

Although a local senator applauds President Bush for promoting the use of faith organizations for assistance in local communities, some local programs are concerned about the restrictions that will come with it.

Bush is publicly supporting the use of federal dollars for the continuance of community service through faith organizations, rather than using those dollars to create new government programs for that purpose.

Sen. Ron Alting, R-22nd, favors Bush's proposal. "There are a lot of faith-based organizations that take care of the people who need help the most," said Alting.

Pop star style appears at mall

While Britney Spears' midriff got more coverage as it grew less covered, the hangers and shelves at Tippecanoe Mall's Wet Seal filled with slashed and cropped glittery T-shirts.

"It’s like watching a good commercial — once you see a good one, you’ll see it again and again," said Larry Smith, a professor of music who studies popular music.

However, Angela Pasyk, a sophomore in the School of Liberal Arts, said she isn't influenced by what the artists are wearing. "I think most artists would look very foolish walking around campus wearing what they do on TV," she said.

Purdue alumnus gives inspiration to students

A 1980 Purdue alumnus and president of Borders Stores and borders.com spoke to students on Tuesday about the lessons she has learned in leadership. At the annual Midwest Retail Management Career Conference, Tami Heim encouraged students to pursue their dreams.

"If you believe you can, you can," said Heim.

Ultimately responsible for 300 national book and music stores, Heim began her career in retail at age 16, when she said she was determined to get a job at Lazarus, a large clothing retailer.
