New license plates from the Indianapolis Children's Museum could become a common sight for Hoosier drivers.

A bill is heading to the House of Representative's floor that would allow this new license plate and others to become an option for Hoosiers.

Rep. Sheila Klinker, D-27th, authored the bill and said she thinks the license plates would be popular in Indiana.

"The museum is a great place for families to go. There are many wonderful and interesting exhibits for people of all ages there."

Kay Harmless, public policy director for the museum, said that in the last year 141,991 school children from throughout the state visited the museum.

"We want to continue the excellent experiences offered here and reach out to everyone in the state to take advantage of this wonderful resource," said Harmless.

Harmless said that this is the first bill the museum has ever filed.

Extra income from the license plates would be used to support new programs at the museum.

Klinker said, "These programs will be both educational and fun."

A $25 fee per plate would establish the Children's Museum trust fund.

"Funds would be used to increase educational program offerings to Hoosier school districts to share knowledge, stimulate imagination, kindle curiosity and affirm the joys of life-long learning," said Harmless.

The museum has been in existence for 75 years and the money will help to continue the deserved reputation that the museum has earned in the past, said Klinker.

Two amendments have been made to the bill that would allow for other license plates to be issued for Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, the Indiana State Medical Association, the Indiana Coalition on Domestic Violence, the Korean War Veterans and other organizations.

After the plates are made for the Children's Museum, 500 must be purchased in order for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to continue them, according to a news release.
