Purdue University's Army ROTC Honor Guard is sponsoring
the Annual Purdue Army Drill Meet to give junior ROTC members the chance
to learn and compete in Army drills.
The meet is from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the
Armory. This is the 26th annual meet, which dates back to the 1950s.
"I think it is actually a good event for our cadets
and junior ROTC cadets," said Jeff McKinley, staff sergeant. "It builds
discipline for future training."
He said it offers training for junior cadets, while
at the same time allowing current Purdue cadets to gain experience in
planning drills and obtaining some additional training.
Sean Delaney, cadet captain and a junior in the
School of Management, said over 400 students from 17 high schools will
compete in nine events ranging from armed and unarmed platoon, squad,
duet and individual drills to color guard.
The high school with the highest average score
will win the commander's trophy.
Springfield High School from Holland, Ohio, won
the trophy last year and will compete again this year.
Delaney said the meet will feature a knockout competition
where cadets will get a chance to execute called-out commands and exhibition
showcasing routines with Springfield Model 1903 rifles.
High schools from Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois,
Wisconsin and Ohio will compete in the meet.
The Army ROTC will also use the meet as an opportunity
to recruit junior ROTC members to come to Purdue. Applications for ROTC
and nursing scholarships will be available for junior ROTC cadets to
fill out.
