Krannert to feature guest speaker

By Genevieve Puppe

The Krannert School of Management’s Executive Forum recently began its programs for the second semester of the school year.

Speakers will continue to visit Purdue’s campus every Friday for several months, covering a variety of topics in their speeches.

Chuck Armstrong, president and chief executive officer of the Seattle Mariners, is scheduled to speak at 11:30 a.m. today in the Krannert Building Auditorium.

Armstrong, a Purdue alumnus, has arranged a speech titled "How Purdue Prepared Me to Run a Major League Baseball Team."

Armstrong, who was named president of the Seattle Mariners on June 29, 1992, received a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering and was designated Purdue engineering’s "Outstanding Senior Man."

"(Purdue) was a perfect place and school," said Armstrong. "I’m looking forward to coming back to Purdue and meeting the students."

The Executive Forum is a one-credit class offered to upperclassman management students, as well as undergraduates from engineering and other schools.

Established in 1973, the Forum is an academic class that features top-level corporate executives as guest lecturers.

Richard Cosier, dean of the Krannert School of Management, is responsible for recruiting guest speakers each semester. Several, but not all, of the speakers are Purdue alumni.

Each speech delivered is open to the public, as space allows.

Cosier said the Executive Forum is a different kind of challenging program that benefits all that attend.

"(The Executive Forum) provides a diversity of speakers and topics," said Cosier, who encourages everyone to come to at least one of the lectures.

The Krannert School of Management’s biannual Executive Forum began the semester on Jan. 26 with John Willis, co-chief executive officer of Willis Stein & Partners.

Jane Boulware, vice president of marketing and e-business for Kimberly-Clark Corporation, spoke the following Friday on lessons she learned between her time at Purdue and her current corporate executive position.

• Following Armstrong is Greg Wasson, vice president of operations for Walgreens, who will speak at 11:30 a.m., Feb. 16 in the Krannert auditorium. The lectures run every Friday morning through April 20.
