Jazz band travels to University Inn for Evening of Romance Saturday

By Jeremy Rea
Staff Writer

For the first time ever this Saturday, the Purdue Jazz Band will perform an Evening of Romance at University Inn.

The event's inception was in the interest of "trying something different … (that) would bring students and the community together in a different venue off-campus," said Kathy Matter, public relations director for Purdue Bands.

Joe Winters, a senior in the Schools of Engineering and an alto saxophonist in the band, also expressed interest in the new event. "I'm excited," he said. "It'll be something new we haven't done before."

Conjuring up the image of a romantic, smoky cabaret, the Evening of Romance will be complete with dim candle lighting, hors d'oeuvres, desserts and drinks. A cash bar of beer and wine will also be available.

Also present, of course, will be the Purdue Jazz Band — the award winning and globally recognized collegiate jazz program. The band will play a wide range of both sexy and swinging jazz, all with the theme of love.

"They're all songs you can dance to," said Winters. "It's for the couples."

"We want to let people chat a little and get up and dance," added Matter.

The evening will also provide students with an unusual way to celebrate the holiday at an inexpensive price, offering a few hours of "Casablanca"-style romance instead of the typical dinner and a movie.

Asked whether attending the affair would improve one's chances for love, Matter said the event will be "a real pleasant evening [but] we can only do so much."

Evening of Romance will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Grand Ballroom of University Inn. Tickets are $15 and include food and drinks, except alcohol. Call 494-3933 for tickets.
