BCC to host annual valentine event tonightBy Jamie Teibel To prepare for Valentines Day many people are searching for ideas to entertain their valentine. Instead of stressing over what to do, let someone else do the entertaining. At 7 tonight in the Black Cultural Center, the Haraka Writers will be hosting their annual "Love Poems." The event is scheduled on or around Valentines Day every year and is centered around love, relationships and sharing the holiday with a special someone. Haraka is the KiSwahili word for "expression." The pieces written and read by the participating Haraka Writers express their own feelings about love and relationships. The pieces include poems and love stories that touch on what love means to different people. Yvette Brown, a senior in the School of Liberal Arts and the student coordinator of the Haraka Writers, said the show is completely run by students and is one of the biggest shows of the year. She said the audience usually includes students, faculty, staff and community members. This year the Haraka Writers will be sharing the stage with the Jahari Dance Troupe and the Black Voices of Inspiration. The Black Voices of Inspiration will contribute love songs to the evening. Earlier in the week, students put in requests for serenades for their special someones in the audience. Holly Charles, a sophomore in the School of Liberal Arts and the student coordinator for the Black Voices of Inspiration, thought of the idea for her group to give serenades. "I thought it would be nice because a lot of people like to give the gift of music, plus it livens things up," she said. Three members of the Jahari Dance Troupe Candace McDonaldRamsey, Allison Banks and Carlene Gomes will perform a dance choreographed by the artist in residence, Keith Clark. Midori Angevine, a senior in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences and the student coordinator for the Jahari Dance Troupe, said the piece is by the group Brownstone. It is a lyrical, slow song that is about love, feelings and how the heart feels about someone you care for. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.
