Heavyweight wins award

Purdue heavyweight Jake Vercelli has been named the Big Ten wrestler of the week this week for his performances in Purdue's two wins last weekend.

Vercelli defeated Wisconsin's Justin Staebler 3-1 in overtime as Purdue beat No. 23 Wisconsin 19-11. He followed that up with a 2-1 win over Michigan State's Matt Lamb in double overtime, which clinched an 18-14 victory over the No. 7 Spartans.

The wins propelled Purdue into a pair of national polls. The Boilers are 21st in the InterMat poll and 23rd in the NWCA/TheMat.com poll.

For the season, Vercelli is 16-6 overall, 4-1 in the Big Ten. He leads the team with six pins, giving him 16 for his career. He is also ranked 20th at heavyweight in the most recent InterMat poll.
