Schools of Engineering prepare for change

For the first time this semester there is an assistant dean in the Schools of Engineering.

Klod Kokini, a professor of mechanical and materials engineering, took over the assistant dean position.

Jeff Wright, an associate dean for the Schools of Engineering, said, "(Kokini) is an excellent person. He has superb interpersonal skills and lots of experience at Purdue. He'll do a great job."

Wright was the assistant dean last semester, but he took over as associate dean on Jan. 1, leaving the assistant dean position open

Students receive unwanted e-mail

Spam, it's not just for dinner anymore.

Spam is the unofficial term for unsolicited e-mails — those unwanted messages that are sent from a variety of sources that are usually trying to sell something.

These sources are generally businesses that often get e-mail addresses by either finding them on an e-mail directory or by buying lists of addresses from Web sites.

The recent appearance of commercial e-mails on many students' Purdue e-mail accounts has some students asking how the spam got there.

Acts of kindness help others

Nikki DeSousa was exiting her class in Heavilon Hall two weeks ago when she heard a woman fainted in the hall.

DeSousa, a senior in the School of Liberal Arts, ran to help the student lying in the hallway. She said the woman's face was red and she was sweating. Amid the confusion, DeSousa and several other students got the woman's name and number.

"We got her name off a paper by her," DeSousa said. "She was coming in and out of consciousness so we asked her what her phone number was and we got her to sip a little bit of cold water. When the paramedics came, we were able to give all the information to them."
