"Whatever Happened to the Way to Retirement?" is
the topic for Thursday's presentation by Karen Moyars, a former Purdue
employee.
Moyars will be speaking to the Association for
Women in Communication 12 p.m. Thursday at the YWCA in Lafayette.
The Association of Women in Communication, founded
in the 1920s, was originally known as Theta Sigma Phi, according to
Mary Moyars-Johnson.
"It is a womens journalism honorary,"
said Moyars-Johnson.
The association was more recently renamed and has
a chapter on campus, now 30-years-old.
Karen Moyars said her speech will include everything
that is involved with running the paper, from gathering the news to
getting it to the printer.
Moyars said her speech would include the benefits
and disadvantages of running a weekly paper. She said she plans to compare
her newspaper to working at a daily paper.
Moyars said she bought the Benton Review, an independent
paper located in Fowler, Ind., and has since turned it into a profitable
family business. She still runs the paper out of Fowler. The newspaper
began its production in 1875 and serves the entire county as one of
approximately 300 independent newspapers in the country.
A graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School,
Moyars then went on to Indiana University and received her bachelors
degree in Journalism and English. After finishing her work there, she
then moved back to Lafayette where she worked for 13 years at the Lafayette
Journal and Courier.
Moyars then moved on to work at Purdue's University
News Service until she bought the Benton Review in 1996.
The lunch is Thursday at noon at the YWCA of Lafayette.
The cost is $8 and reservations can be made by calling 494-9857 and
leaving a message for Mary Moyars-Johnson.
