The Jahari Dance Troupe and New Directional Players
will perform at 7 tonight in Fowler Hall as the Black Cultural Center
presents its spring coffee house, "Expressions of the Heart."
Midori Angevine, a senior in the School of Consumer
and Family Sciences and the student coordinator of the Jahari Dance
Troupe, chose the theme to coincide with Valentines Day and the
feelings of love that surround the holiday.
The Jahari Dance Troupe, the dance group at the
center, will dance to two songs. The first, "Summer Rain"
by Carl Thomas, has a summertime feel to it, with a tropical beat.
Angevine said the dancers will interpret love and
feelings of the heart during the second song, "Dont Cry for
Me" by Brownstone.
The New Directional Players, the drama group at
the center, will perform excerpts of three plays.
"The Dutchman" tells the story of a man
and woman who, while riding the subway, talk about their wants and needs.
"Joe Turners Come and Gone" shares the experience of
a girlfriend and boyfriend who share their first kiss while discussing
encounters with ghosts. "Othello" is a Shakespearean tragedy
that tells the tale of a black man who deals with issues of jealousy,
prejudice and racism because of his interracial marriage.
Michael Adams, a sophomore in the University Division
and the student coordinator of the New Directional Players said each
10- to15-minute piece will exhibit the significance of the writing and
literature of black plays and playwrights. Although the title of the
event suggests a coffee house environment, no refreshments will be served.
Admission is $5 for students, $7 for the general public.
