Union responds positively
to student budget needs
As one of the faculty members directly involved
in the recent GSA/PSG negotiations with Purdue Memorial Union over food
prices, I write to express my dismay over the negative tone of the Exponent's
coverage of those meetings.
The real news is not that the Union's food has
been over-priced and under-proportioned. The real news is that Bob Mindrum,
the director of the Union, has been so responsive to student needs,
concerns and complaints that the Union has actually cut its prices,
adjusted its serving sizes and added six different, daily, affordable,
nutritious, "special" meals.
In doing so, the Union has put its profit margin
at risk in order to serve students better. This is no small thing and
it deserves our applause and support, not criticism.
The Exponent is right to publicize the positive
changes in the Purdue Memorial Union Food Court. If students know that
affordable, wholesome good food is available there, they will feel more
at home in the Union. That is Mr. Mindrum's goal and ours.
Purdue's Union is one of the very few self-managed
unions in the Big Ten. None of us wants the Union to become another
"fast food" place. Let's continue to work together to improve Union
services, but first we need to say a big "thank you" to Bob Mindrum
and his staff for what's already been done. That's good news indeed
and deserving of front-page headlines.
