Opinion column needs more
accurate reporting
This is in response to Brian Dillons Exponent
column on Feb. 19 regarding boy bands. Now, I understand that this is
a column about personal opinions. But if I submitted a column to the
Exponent, I would make sure I have thoroughly researched my paper. I
find this is not the case in Mr. Dillons column. While I respect
Mr. Dillons opinions, his research skills are in dire need of
improvement.
First, Mr. Dillon states that hes looked
at album credits to see which groups "could take credit for the lyrics."
I do wonder which groups he took a look at. If he would merely take
a closer look at a few "boy bands" and their latest albums (respectively,
'NSYNC's "No Strings Attached," Backstreet Boys "Black and Blue"
and 98 Degrees "Revelation"), he would find a plethora of songs
written by individuals from each group. Or perhaps Mr. Dillon, in his
extensive research, forgot to research the names of each group member.
(Also: in 'NSYNCs debut album, the song "Giddy Up" is credited
to the whole group).
Also, as for how a group was created recently,
"reality" TV shows documenting the "start" of pop groups have begun
popping up on TV. Those shows are not a representation of how a group
truly is created. Those shows only show what record executives would
like naive TV viewers to believe. Groups such as 'NSYNC and 98 Degrees
did form their groups by themselves and two minutes of searching
through Yahoo will also tell you that.
So, just curious if you would do weeks of
research for a paper to be read by one professor, why wouldnt
you do at least an hours worth of researching for a column to
be read by thousands?
