Purdue should not include condoms in yearly expenseIn response to the Feb. 16 editorial in the Exponent on condom distribution, I do not agree with the position the editorial board took toward this issue. First, let's make the recommendation for the old-fashioned abstinence. I realize it's not the socially acceptable norm anymore, but after all it is the safest. If a student decides not to accept abstinence then it should be that student's responsibility to take care of their self, not Purdue University. Second, the last time I checked, Purdue students were at least considered adults. Are you telling me that the future leaders of tomorrow, the engineers, astronauts, scientists, accountants and management professionals, don't have the responsibility or common sense to get a condom on their own? How absurd! If these students don't have enough responsibility for themselves then by all means send them home to mom and dad who will make sure they are provided with a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and yes, even condoms. Lastly, I would like to see Purdue exhibit some financial constraint. I am tired of the state of Indiana and students looked up by Purdue as some never-ending cash cow. Purdue continues to ask for more each year from both the state and students (seven percent increase in tuition next year) without ever considering cutting out unnecessary expense like free condom distribution. Let the Student Wellness Center obtain their own funding for frivolous programs and let Purdue get back to focusing on education. The price of education is great but at what expense?
