On Monday, veterinarians, pork producers and employees
of the swine industry across Indiana will be tuning in through the Internet
to a new breeding herd management course being conducted by Purdue University's
department of animal science.
Purdue is hosting the class, which is the first
in a series of swine education courses. The course is being beamed to
Purdue Cooperative Extension Service offices in six Indiana counties
over a two-way ATM network connection.
The high speed of the connection will allow students
in the course to interactively participate with the professor and ask
questions in real time through microphone equipped terminals.
Wayne Singleton, an extension swine specialist
and professor at Purdue, is teaching the course. According to Singleton,
the course offers a diverse program, providing an opportunity for workforce
development.
"The electronic classroom environment is a
great way to deliver training information to clientele all over the
state," said Singleton. "And all I had to do was walk to Stewart Center
to teach the course."
Singleton is conducting the course from a centralized
console in a classroom located in Stewart Center. He will be able to
see each of the classrooms on mini screens, which are located on the
console. He will also have the ability to display diagrams, notes, and
pictures to complement his lecture.
Tracie Egger, a distance learning coordinator,
helped promote and organize the course. According to Egger, agriculture
in general is becoming more technologically advanced.
"There is a growing trend in the agriculture
community to move towards distance education," said Egger. "And
the education service would be very convenient for busy farmers, who
wouldnt have to come to Purdues West Lafayette campus to
participate in the course."
The four-week course is being broadcast from 3:15
to 5:15 p.m. every Monday, and will continue through March 5. Participants
enrolled in the course will not receive college credit through Purdue;
however, upon completing the course, the participants will receive a
certificate in Breeding Herd Management.
The registration fee for the course is $125 per
person. This cost includes enrollment in the course and study materials,
such as training aids, diagrams and guides, which are sent to the students
house.
