Karen Jo Smith was last seen on the night of Dec.
27, 2000, and is still missing.
Patti Bishop, Smiths stepmother, was the
opening speaker about domestic violence for Purdues "Take back
the night" in October. Ironically, Bishop and Detective Judy Phillips
of the Indianapolis Police Department, said there are allegations that
Smith could have been in an abusive relationship with her ex-husband.
Smith was at her Indianapolis home the evening
of Dec. 27, 2000, in the company of her ex-husband. The next morning
she was not there.
"Were still talking to people and looking
into some leads," said Phillips. "There is nothing definitive in terms
of confirmed sightings of her." Phillips said that some people have
said they have seen her or someone that looks like her and police are
still checking it out.
Phillips said it was not clear if she left voluntarily
or involuntarily.
"There is nothing really concrete (about) how she
left the house," said Phillips.
Smiths ex-husband turned himself in for a
parole violation on Jan. 11, 2001, and is in a correction facility in
Pendleton, Ind. According to a Web site dedicated to finding Smith,
she is 35 years old, 5-feet-11 inches tall and weighs 148 pounds. She
has brown hair and blue eyes and sometimes walks with a limp due to
cleft foot.
There is a $5,000 reward for locating Smith. If
someone has any information on this case, contact missing persons detective
Judy Phillips at 317-327-6613, case #116106. For more information about
the case or the reward, visit the Web site at .
