The pride of Russia's performing culture will play
on Purdue's campus this Sunday as part of its fifth transcontinental
tour.
The Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra, having played such
venues as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, will perform at 3 p.m.
in the Elliott Hall of Music.
Pavel Klinichev will lead the performance. He serves
as the conductor for the Bolshoi Theatre, conducting both the Bolshoi
Opera and the Bolshoi Ballet.
"This is musicianship at its finest," said Diane
Daubert, a spokesperson for the ensemble.
Ranging in ages from 20 to 70, members of the orchestra
went through phases of intense competition to audition for their place
in the pit. Founded in 1776, the world-renowned orchestra stationed
in Moscow has had great success performing in Japan, England, Canada,
Italy, Germany and other countries.
The Bolshoi Theatre, a landmark in Russia's capital,
became a state institution in 1800. The Bolshoi Theatre attributes the
professionalism of the orchestra to its musicians, many of whom are
winners of international competitions and teachers at performing arts
institutions.
The orchestra will perform classical works by Russian
composers, like Tchaikovsky and Verdi.
"These are first-class musicians," said Daubert.
"This performance is going to be a spectacular event that Purdue students
and people of all ages will enjoy."
