Men's tennis team prepares
to play weekend matches
The mens tennis team improved to 3-2 on the
season with its second 7-0 victory of the season last Sunday against
Brown. They will try to carry that momentum into weekend matches against
Ball State and Notre Dame. The team opens on the road against the Redbirds
at 2 p.m. Saturday in Muncie, Ind., and returns home to face the Irish
at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lafayette Sports Center.
"We had an exceptional level of doubles play today
that set the tone for us," head coach Tim Madden said. "We got on top
of them early and intimidated them a little. That gave us an edge and
helped us tremendously in singles."
Purdue made it seem easy when it claimed all three
of the doubles wins, allowing only four total points from the Bears.
In singles action, the Old Gold and Black showed little mercy as they
won all except one match in straight sets. Senior Jason Marshall claimed
a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nick Malone at the No. 1 position. At No. 2,
sophomore Scott Mayer knocked off Jamie Cerretani 6-3, 6-3.
"Scott is so good at preparing for matches that
when he competes, it looks as if he is running a drill," Madden said.
"He has the look of a winner and the gestures to match. He really gets
the team involved and excited during matches."
Sophomore Carl McCafferty defeated Chris Drake
7-6, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot and classmate Andrew Wakefield beat Alex
Walden 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Junior Derek Miller defeated Ben Brier 7-6,
6-4 and senior Dan Swan rounded off the 7-0 victory by beating J.R.
Argo 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
