PUCC needs to increase bandwidthFor those ResNet customers who believe the lies fed to you by PUCC regarding the Internet bandwidth problems, I am writing this letter to explain the truth to you. First of all, PUCC never did really fix the Internet problem that still exists nearly a month after this fiasco all started. All PUCC did was limit the amount of bandwidth that you can use for transferring files in certain "popular" file sharing applications. The REAL problem is that the computing center has done nothing whatsoever to increase the capacity of the Internet backbone that connects the more than 9,000 ResNet subscribers to Chicago. Therefore, as many people have noticed, file transfer speeds haven't really improved that much. Our friends at PUCC do not have any official published statements regarding this issue, nor are they going to address it or correct the problem until they can squeeze every last penny out of us with their rising rates each year. These days, a single 45mbps DS-3 line is simply not enough bandwidth for ResNet students at a university of Purdue's size. I would not be surprised if PUCC doesn't increase our bandwidth by the start of next semester, after they have charged us higher access costs again. Doug Meyer Freshman, School of Technology |
