Opinions

Students should delay sexual activity

This letter is in response to Ian Clift’s Feb. 14 Exponent column. Allow me to present an alternate opinion. The purpose of the sexual union is two-fold.

First, the sexual act fosters love between a man and a woman. However, true love in its fullest sense is giving totally of oneself to another.

This fullness of love cannot be attained when you use contraception because you are not giving entirely of yourself. You are holding back your sexuality.

The second purpose of the sexual union is procreation. Its function is to bring forth life. When you use contraception this purpose is also omitted.

If both love and openness to life are eliminated from the act, with what are you left? You are left with an empty act: an act of selfishness instead of selflessness. Thus, when you use contraception it is a misuse of your sexuality. So, am I advocating unprotected sex thereby causing the transmission of disease and the proliferation of unwanted pregnancies?

On the contrary, if the sexual union is reserved for marriage, a marriage in which true love is fostered, these problems will be practically eliminated.

I am aware that the inevitable response to my letter will be "That’s fine for you, but don’t impose your morality on me." That is not my intent. Morality is something that has to be meditated upon and accepted freely. Thus, my bottom line is this. Think about it and Aim Higher!
