Purdue places second in
track championship
Mike Poehlein, who is in his 28th season as the
Purdue men's track and field coach, received Coach of the Year honors
for the second time in his career as he led the Boilermakers to a second
place finish at the Big Ten Indoor Championships at Penn State. Purdue
racked up 94 total points, only 10 behind first-place Wisconsin.
Chris Brown won the 35-pound weight throw, shattering
the Big Ten and facility records and upping his NCAA automatic bid mark
to 71-11.50. Brown won the shot put on Saturday with a throw of 18.96/62-2.50.
Teammate Igor Kirin placed third in the event with an NCAA provisional
mark of 65-5.50.
Jacques Reeves placed second in both the 60-meter
dash (21.04) and 200-meter dash. The rookie's time of 21.04 in the 200
was an NCAA provisional mark. Markus Williams also earned an NCAA provisional
mark in the 400 with a personal best time of 46.91. Williams and Reeves
both qualified for the USATF's to be held this weekend.
Donnie Fellows came in fifth in the 3,000-meter
run with a time of 8:14.06.
In the long jump, Shaun Guice placed second with
a leap of 7-0.50. Ryan Fitzpatrick was fourth with a leap of 6-11.00.
Amukela Gwebu was fourth in the triple jump with a lifetime best mark
of 50-3.50.
Prentice Stovall placed fourth in the 60-meter
dash with a time of 6.82 and was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with
a time of 7.99.
