BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Katie Douglas saved herself for the final minute.

Douglas, who logged 34 minutes for the game, had two crucial rebounds – her only two of the game – and scored the Boilers' final four points as Purdue held on for a 74-72 victory over Texas Tech (25-7) in the Mideast Regional semifinals Saturday afternoon in Birmingham-Jefferson Arena.

"At the end, Katie Douglas made the big play," said Texas Tech coach Marsha Sharp.

Valek suffers injury in final minutes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Purdue’s Erika Valek may have been playing her best game of the season Saturday in the third round of the NCAA tournament. Most likely, though, it was in her last game of the year.

The freshman point guard tore the anterior cruciate ligament of her right knee in the closing minutes of third-seeded Purdue’s victory over No. 2 seed Texas Tech on Saturday.

With the Boilers holding a 69-63 lead with just more than four minutes left in the game, Valek dribbled the ball up the court.

"Basically I was just trying to come down and set up an offense and (my knee) just popped in and back out," said Valek, who appeared to step on the foot of a Texas Tech player. "I heard it pop and that’s when I was a little scared about because I’ve never had anything like this."

The first and second overtimes of Purdue's 85-77 loss to Alabama Friday night were a microcosm of the Boilers' season.

With John Allison and Rodney Smith in the lineup Purdue could contend with any team. Without the junior post players, the Boilers struggled. This was the case once again Friday night.

"As everybody knows, they're our two best players, and it's hard to win these type of games without your two best players, your two best scorers, your two best rebounders," guard Kenneth Lowe said. "Our young guys came in and did the best they could, but we just couldn't put it away."
