PSG needs student involvement, opinionsPurdue Student Government, like it or not, is your government. It's the portion of Purdue policy-making with a student voice. And it has been attacked in recent months for failing to sound that voice. The only way to stop those attacks and insure your interests are being represented is to become a little active yourself. Becoming active this way won't be stressful; you won't even have to leave your room. Just take a minute to read up on the platforms of each ticket, and then log on to SSINFO sometime between Tuesday and Thursday to vote for president and vice president. It's a small step towards a more effective student government. We at the Exponent asked twice for student opinions on Purdue Student Government, and got only a couple responses. Since even the most minute news items receive abundant student letters, it seems strange that two calls for letters went unheard. It means most of you don't know or don't care. If you don't know, read up a bit. If you don't care, remember that that's why the student government is failing you. It's failed you because you've failed it. Think of Purdue as a corporation. As students, the one employee we are responsible for hiring is Purdue Student Government. We hire these employees and then pay them, and unless we care what these employees do and tell them what we want, they can't do their job. They can only guess, and then listen to us complain that they've done it wrong. The student body president and vice president are the top officers of the student government. If we're going to grab control of the organization, it makes sense to start at the top and work down. n Editorial Board: Keith Thomas, Tom McHenry, Melissa Davis and Laura Pelner. |
