New plan unfairly represents studentsLately, I have seen a lot of information on the student referendum. Most of it was in favor telling how it will better represent the student body. I would like to say that it would not. Right now we have representatives from each residence hall, sorority and fraternity. How would it help the students for them to be represented by their school? I would much rather be represented by someone who lives in the same place, and consequently will probably have the same issues on their mind. With the proposed system, my representative could be someone living in a sorority or even off campus. In that case, they most likely wouldn't care what happens where I live. I have one scenario for you. While it is a bit extreme, it could very easily happen. With the new system there would be 26 seats. That means to have a guaranteed majority you would need 14. I'm sure that every sorority, frat, or residence hall has at least 14 people. What if 14 or more were elected from one place? They would be able to decide exactly what was passed and what wasn't. Not in the regular PSG meetings, but just by a closed-door meeting in a room down the hall. Kevin Grant Fouts Sophomore, School of Technology |
