Slayter Slammer is back and the preparations are
starting with the Battle of the Bands competition.
The competition between local musicians will take
place from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday in the Triangle fraternity back lot,
103 University St.
This year's Battle of the Bands is between two
local groups, Slizzard Kings and Flying Leroys, and two bands from around
the state, Render 1 and Five Star Deluxe.
The first and second place winners of the competition
will go on to open for the headlining band during Slayter Slammer, which
will come back on Sept. 8 following a year's hiatus.
The Battle of the Bands is sponsored by 95.7 The
Rocket, which will be in the back lot all afternoon and evening to emcee.
95.7 will also sponsor Slayter Slammer in conjunction with X 103.3.
The headlining band for Slayter Slammer will not
be announced until a few days before the event.
Hosting the Battle of the Bands along with Triangle
are the fraternities Acacia and Alpha Kappa Lambda, and the sororities
Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Chi Omega and Alpha Omicron Pi.
All are contributing to security and crowd control,
and the Purdue Police and Fire departments will be notified of the event.
Each band is allotted 45 minutes a set, and there
is a 30-minute allowance for tear down and set up between bands.
The Battle of the Bands is free to the public.
Derek Thomas, a sophomore in the Schools of Engineering and a member
of Triangle, said he hopes everyone feels comfortable going because
it is not just for those in the Greek community.
He said all are strongly encouraged to come out
and support the musicians.
