Female high school juniors from across Indiana
as well as neighboring states have been invited to a attend a "Women
in Computer Sciences Career Day" at Purdue.
The hands-on seminar will host women and parents
from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Jean Jackson, director of the department of computer
sciences undergraduate office, said only 11.5 percent of the Purdue
computer science department are women. The average number of women in
the entire science department is around 37 percent.
"The present and future need for computer
scientists is enormous, and it is an area in which women are greatly
underrepresented," said Jackson.
According to computer science professor Susanne
Hambrusch, women from high school just dont know about computer
science.
The goal of the career day is to inform young women
of the opportunities in the field. "This is about getting the word
out," said Hambrusch.
The program allows the women to participate in
labs and hear current computer science students speak. Parents will
attend separate sessions that focus on admissions and financial aid.
"The program has been held for several years,"
said speaker Eugene Spafford, professor of computer science and a speaker
in the program. "The CS department makes an effort to improve the
gender imbalance."
Jackson said, "Women can bring a different
perspective and can make good money."
The career day should both inform the high school
women about the program and persuade them to study computer science.
"Women are not choosing technology," said Jackson.
The faculty members hope to change this.
