On Sunday night a Grand Prix convocation on alcohol
awareness will be held for students with concerns about alcohol issues.
"Its obviously an issue on campus no
matter what age you are," said Andrea Goedde, vice president for
membership for the Purdue Cooperative Council.
She said the event will make students stop and
think when they are drinking and slow down.
The event will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Elliott
Hall of Music. The event is free and open to all students.
Grant Lohse, president of the Interfraternity Council,
said, "It is particularly important that education on these issues
take place in conjunction with Grand Prix because the week is typically
characterized by an increased number of social events."
Jared Brown, director of legal aid for Purdue Student
Government, said, "It's going to be educational and beneficial
in a variety of ways."
The keynote speaker at the event will be Mike Green,
a nationally renowned speaker on alcohol abuse and president of the
Collegiate Consultants on Drugs and Alcohol.
Green is a recovering alcoholic and former defensive
lineman and defensive line coach at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
He is the consultant to the athletic and student
affairs departments at numerous universities including Temple and Villanova,
and has instituted high school drug and alcohol programs in New Jersey.
Jerrud Rossing, vice president of operations for
the Interfraternity Council, said, "We just wanted to bring him
here and show people how to be responsible, to make everybody aware
of the knowns and unknowns of alcohol."
He said that some of the topics Green will talk
about are the dangers and signs of alcohol poisoning, how to prevent
yourself from becoming an alcoholic and what days of the year to avoid
drinking because the days are synonymous with alcohol poisoning.
Barbara Green, the wife of Mike Green, said he
has a passion to help people.
She said he does not moralize or preach during
his speeches, but rather gives a performance to make students aware
of the dangers associated with alcohol.
Rossing said it is important to give a presentation
like this at the start of spring because as the weather becomes warmer,
people will start going out to drink more.
The event will also feature a question and answer
session with lawyers and members of the local police departments. Goedde
said the students will be able to ask any questions about alcohol abuse
and the alcohol policies of Purdue and West Lafayette.
"Any questions about the law (students) have,
they have the law right there to ask," she said.
